Online Ads is What We Do

When I was young, my favorite pastime while riding in the back seat of my parents’ car was to read signs out loud as we drove through the city. Something about communicating bold, simple messages about what was happening at your store or shop intrigued me. Everything about the message, from the images, graphics, scenery, colors, faces, actions, background, lighting, and much more, was part of what they wanted you to feel. Corporations like McDonald’s, Target, Macy’s and JCPenney had very well put together themes and messages.

They always seemed to know what to say and said it at the right time and in the right place. I wondered why the neighborhood body shop couldn’t do the same. They wouldn’t have to spend more money; they would just have to think more strategically, like big-box retail stores. I’ve carried that thought process into adulthood as a graphic designer and now as a seasoned digital advertiser. Let me share some of my ideas on how I can improve your business in one of the areas below.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) / Paid Search

Search engine marketing is the foundation of performance-based digital advertising. It focuses on placing ads in front of users who are actively searching for a solution. Through platforms like Google Ads and Microsoft Ads, advertisers bid on keywords relevant to their products or services.

The strength of SEM lies in its intent—when someone searches for “emergency dentist near me” or “buy hiking boots,” they’re already halfway to making a purchase. Success here requires strategic keyword research, tightly themed campaigns, persuasive ad copy, and the effective use of bidding strategies such as Target CPA or Maximize Conversions. SEM also relies heavily on negative keywords to reduce waste, ad extensions to increase real estate and engagement, and conversion tracking to measure what drives actual sales or leads.

Display Advertising

Display advertising allows brands to reach users across millions of websites and apps using banner ads, interactive creatives, or rich media. Unlike search, which targets intent, display focuses on awareness and retargeting—getting your brand seen by the right people, whether they’re actively shopping or not. Display campaigns are built around contextual placements, interest-based audiences, or behavioral signals.

Ads must be visually engaging and sized correctly for multiple screen types. An effective display strategy also includes frequency capping, brand safety settings, placement exclusions, and continuous optimization to avoid wasted impressions. When used correctly, display advertising keeps your brand top of mind and drives action through repeated exposure.

Social Media Advertising

Social advertising focuses on reaching users where they spend their time—on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Snapchat. These platforms offer in-depth targeting based on demographics, interests, behaviors, and custom audience segments, such as website visitors or CRM uploads. Social campaigns can be crafted to match every stage of the funnel—from broad awareness video ads to conversion-focused carousels and lead forms.

Creatives must be visually compelling and platform-specific, with messaging that feels native rather than intrusive. The success of social advertising often hinges on constant testing: new hooks, headlines, offers, and formats. Each campaign should be paired with pixel tracking, event setup (such as purchases or sign-ups), and performance monitoring to refine it based on ROI.

Video Advertising

Video advertising combines storytelling with scale. Platforms like YouTube, Meta, and TikTok enable brands to showcase products and services in motion, offering stronger emotional engagement than static content. Pre-roll, mid-roll, bumper, and discovery formats give advertisers flexibility in where and how they appear. YouTube, in particular, offers advanced targeting based on user intent, search history, and affinity groups, while TikTok thrives on native-looking content that blends in with the feed.

To succeed with video, you must pair a strong hook with fast pacing, a clear value proposition, and a compelling call-to-action. Campaigns benefit from sequencing (telling a story over multiple videos), strategic bidding, and innovative use of overlays or companion banners.

Shopping Ads / Product Feed Advertising

Shopping ads are performance powerhouses for e-commerce brands. Unlike text ads, they showcase a product’s image, price, title, and retailer name directly in search results. Google Shopping and Microsoft Shopping rely on high-quality product feeds submitted through Merchant Center. These feeds must be structured correctly with detailed titles, descriptions, product IDs, pricing, and availability to ensure eligibility and optimal performance.

Advanced strategies include segmenting products into tiers, excluding poor performers, and combining shopping ads with Performance Max campaigns to allow Google’s AI to dynamically place ads across search, display, YouTube, and Gmail. Conversion tracking and ROAS-based bidding complete the loop by ensuring spend aligns with sales.

CTV (Connected TV) Advertising

CTV advertising refers to video ads served on TV screens connected to the internet. This includes smart TVs, streaming devices like Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick, and gaming consoles like Xbox or PlayStation. The key here is: the ad is shown on a TV screen, but it’s delivered digitally. Why it matters: CTV combines the impact of traditional television (big screen, sound on, full attention) with the precision targeting and tracking of digital ads. Instead of buying a time slot during the evening news, you’re buying audiences—like “parents in Chicago who love outdoor gear and recently searched for hiking boots.”

CTV inventory is becoming more accessible to small and mid-sized businesses thanks to platforms like MNTN, Vibe.co, and StackAdapt. AI is also being used to auto-generate video creatives and optimize placements based on performance.

Programmatic Advertising

Programmatic advertising automates the media buying process across thousands of websites and apps using real-time bidding. Platforms like DV360, The Trade Desk, or StackAdapt allow advertisers to purchase ad impressions one at a time, targeting specific users based on demographics, behavior, and intent signals.

Programmatic makes it possible to serve a dynamic banner ad to a 35-year-old fitness enthusiast on a cooking blog at 9:47 pm in Chicago—while paying only what that impression is worth. The sophistication of this system lies in its ability to layer on data, optimize bidding, and rotate creatives in milliseconds. Programmatic also offers private marketplace deals, retargeting, cross-device tracking, and deep control over brand safety, making it a powerful tool for both direct response and awareness.

Retargeting / Remarketing

Retargeting is the art of bringing back visitors who didn’t convert the first time. Whether someone abandoned their cart, watched a video, or simply browsed your pricing page, retargeting ads follow them across the web and social platforms. These ads are personalized, time-sensitive, and designed to re-engage warm traffic. Platforms like Google Ads, Meta, and TikTok allow advertisers to build segmented audiences based on user behavior—such as “visited product page but didn’t purchase” or “watched 75% of video.” Smart retargeting involves rotating creatives, offering incentives (like discounts or urgency), and frequency capping to avoid fatigue. This strategy consistently delivers some of the highest ROAS across all ad types.

Native Advertising

Native ads are designed to match the look and feel of the platform on which they appear. Rather than standing out like a banner, native ads blend in, showing up as sponsored articles, promoted recommendations, or suggested posts. Platforms like Outbrain, Taboola, and Yahoo Native deliver these ads across premium publishers, driving traffic to blog-style landing pages, quizzes, or advertorials. Native ads are ideal for storytelling and mid-funnel engagement. Their success depends on attention-grabbing headlines, curiosity-inducing thumbnails, and conversion-focused landing pages that provide real value. Despite their subtle appearance, native ads are subject to strict compliance rules, particularly in industries such as health, finance, or politics.

Landing Page Optimization

Even the best ad campaigns will fail if the landing page doesn’t convert. Landing Page Optimization (LPO) ensures that when users click, they land on a fast, mobile-friendly, and persuasive page that reinforces the ad’s promise. This process involves A/B testing layouts, refining headlines, optimizing page speed, streamlining forms, and eliminating friction from the conversion path. Using tools like Hotjar, Google Optimize, or VWO, marketers can identify drop-off points and refine user experience. LPO directly impacts Quality Score, ROAS, and customer acquisition cost (CAC), making it a non-negotiable part of any digital advertising strategy.

Analytics, Tracking & Attribution

No campaign can scale without data. A proper analytics setup enables advertisers to identify what’s working and what’s wasting money. This includes configuring Google Analytics 4 (GA4), setting up conversion events via Google Tag Manager, and creating UTM frameworks for channel attribution. Platforms like Meta and TikTok also require pixel and event tracking to optimize delivery. Advanced advertisers implement multi-touch attribution, custom dashboards, and CRM integrations to connect ad spend with revenue. Tracking isn’t just about measurement—it’s about visibility, optimization, and informed decision-making.
